Like many houses built in the 70’s, Old Mill Park was originally very basic and pragmatic. It had lots of bedrooms (for the 11 kids), two toilets, two showers and a tiny bathroom.
The windows leaked, heating was limited, the kitchen was falling apart, it had asbestos in most rooms, and the termites had been dining there for years. It desperately needed some love.
We had a 5 month window where we had no guests, and the demolition work started with removal of the asbestos.
We had spent 12 months finding 70’s lights, laminates, carpet and lava lamps. These were all there on the day the builder started.
The carpet in the lounge and Bedroom 6 was used in cinema foyers in the 70’s. The orange lights in the kitchen came from a 70’s house demolished in Mildura. The lava lamp came from England.
The dining table is the original one built for the house, and its top has been flipped upside down and given a new timber finish. If you look under the table you will see the original 50 year old laminate top.
We wanted to keep Old Mill Park firmly planted in the 70’s, but we wanted it to be comfortable and inviting for our guests. Some of it is new, some re-purposed and some is original.
We hope you like her.
Within the surrounding alpine peaks, river valleys, and high plains of this region are the boundaries where the traditional lands of the Dhudhuroa, Taungurung, Waywurru, Gunaikurnai, and Jaithmathang peoples meet. We acknowledge these First Peoples as the original storytellers and Traditional Custodians of the Alpine Shire and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.
