Steve’s parents left Devon, England, in the 1950s as a young engaged couple, full of dreams. They first lived in Mount Beauty and eventually settled in Bright in the early 1970s. Here they bought the old timber mill site and built the house that is now Old Mill Park, where they raised 11 children.
The original house oozed 70s charm and excess… bold colours, plywood walls, exposed beams, strawboard ceilings, horrendous tiles. However, 50 years on the old girl was tired and needed a facelift, so in 2024 we set about bringing her up to current standards while still celebrating the 70s fun and exuberance. Even the horrendous tiles were carefully removed, cleaned and re-used.
Old Mill Park stands today as a celebration of the 70s and all its fun and frolic, and pays homage to the parents and 11 children who called it home.
Within the surrounding alpine peaks, river valleys, and high plains of this region are the boundaries where the traditional lands of the Dhudhuroa, Taungurung, Waywurru, Gunaikurnai, and Jaithmathang peoples meet. We acknowledge these First Peoples as the original storytellers and Traditional Custodians of the Alpine Shire and pay our respects to Elders past, present, and emerging.
